Site Spotlight – Hillend Campsite
When the British sun finally makes its appearance, there is truly no finer place to be than the Gower Peninsula in South Wales. We hope that our site spotlight – Hillend Campsite inspires you.
This area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has remained a firm favourite for our family over the years. Between the rugged coastal paths, the sheer scale of its expansive beaches, and those tucked-away, quirky cafés, it offers a perfect slice of Welsh wilderness.
The Stay: Hillend Campsite, Rhossili Bay
One of our preferred spots for an overnight stay is Hillend Campsite. Located on the edge of Rhossili Bay, it sits just a short stroll from what is—in my humble opinion—one of the finest beaches in the world.
While Hillend is a popular site, it retains a wonderfully rustic charm. The pitches are spread across 14 acres of undulating meadowland, ensuring you never feel crowded. It’s a site with a vibrant soul, earning it well-deserved spots in the “Top 10 UK Campsites” lists for both The Times and The Observer.
Coastal Pursuits & Gastronomic Pitstops
Whether you are a seasoned walker or a water sports enthusiast, the location is peerless:
-
For the Walkers: The Wales Coastal Path brushes right past the campsite, offering miles of breathtaking cliffside views.
-
For the Adventurous: With several surf schools nearby, the Atlantic swells at Llangennith are a magnet for surfers and paddleboarders alike.
-
The Hub: At the entrance lies Eddy’s Café. Boasting spectacular views across the burrows and the bay, it is the heart of the site. Whether you’re enjoying a crisp glass of wine on the terrace, a hearty breakfast indoors, or grabbing a high-quality packed lunch for a day on the dunes, it never fails to impress.
The on-site shop is equally well-considered, stocking fresh local produce alongside the essential camping necessities—perfect for those evenings when you’d rather stay put in the comfort of your GlamperRV and watch the sun dip below the horizon.
A Tale of Two Seasons
Hillend is a site of two halves. During the holidays, it is a bustling, family-orientated escape with a dedicated recreation field and adventure playground for the grandchildren to burn off their energy.
However, for those of us with the flexibility to travel during term time, the scene shifts. It becomes a peaceful sanctuary—a quiet, front-row seat to one of nature’s most dramatic coastal shows.
