Trip of the Month: Somerset

This month my inspiration for our GlamperRV luxury motorhome hire adventure comes from a great friend who is a regular visitor to Somerset (no, not just in festival season!) and recently posted a series of stunning images on Instagram that she captured whilst visiting the hides at RSPB Ham Wall.  This spectacular location is situated a stone’s throw from Glastonbury yet wonderfully under the radar.  A Brit Stops pub is conveniently located just a few minutes’ walk away from the hides which makes the perfect base.  The Railway Inn is a friendly, community pub serving good Somerset cider and home to a traditional skittle alley.  It is also located close to the Glastonbury Canal path which passes through the Somerset Levels, a waterside walk that will take you through the Avalon Marshes to Glastonbury. A good tip for those orthologists amongst you – call the RSPB and they will advise you where the birds are roosting.

Venture further west in Somerset through the old- fashioned town of Bridgwater and you will find the Quantocks Hills. If you enjoy exploring the moors, watching wild ponies and breathtaking landscapes then this is a location for you.  There are a number of highly recommended Wild Camping spots out in the hills if you feel like getting to one with nature, just take a look on Search for Sites, alternatively explore Brit Stops if you fancy a pub stopover and of course there are a range of traditional campsites.

Head north towards Bristol and you will reach another spectacular sight in this often overlooked county, Cheddar Gorge.  The limestone gorge is the site of the Cheddar show caves, where Britain’s oldest complete human skeleton, Cheddar Man, estimated to be over 9,000 years old was found.  Another great day out and again,a wide variety of places to park up overnight.

Whilst in Somerset a visit to the Spa town of Bath is definitely something to be done.  We have stayed at the Bath Marina & Caravan Park which whilst a larger site to most I recommend it has a small site feel about it and is ideally located on the River Avon allowing you to walk or cycle along the riverside into the City centre.

Somerset is one of those counties that is often driven through en route to its more popular South West neighbours yet it offers a rich tapestry of landscapes and wildlife to explore.

I hope this has provided you with inspiration for your GlamperRV luxury motorhome hire adventure.
